Comedy Therapy is interactive and hands-on, allowing you to tap into your hidden comic potential to heal and transcend pain (I know … a tall order). As a participant, you will learn the secrets to transforming core beliefs into belly laughter. You will learn how to tolerate difficult emotions, relieve stress, and to perform random acts of funny. So stand up, slip on a banana, and welcome to the show!
So how can this work? You ever notice how something awful that happens to you often becomes funny in the future? Our goal is to speed up that process and see the comedy sooner than later. One way to do this is through ExaGgeRation!!!!!!!!!!!!! A similar process occurs in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy where a patient imagines the absolute worst case scenario and how they would handle it.
But I’m getting ahead of myself. The first thing we are going to focus on is creating a caption for an old public domain cartoon. This exercise works out your creative funny bone. I want you to look at the cartoon drawing above and write down the first thing that comes to mind. Don’t worry if it’s not funny. Stop reading now and do it (I’m bossy).
Okay good. Now I want you to come up with 4 more captions for the cartoon. If at any point, your mind goes blank … no worries! Simply close your eyes and breath deeply in through your nose … hold … and out through your mouth. Then write whatever comes. I give you absolute permission to write 5 things that are NOT funny. Self judgement be gone! Post your 5 captions in the comment section below.
