Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Michael Porco and I am the comedians’ psychotherapist. Comedy and psychotherapy make for intimate bedfellows.
You’ve probably heard that comedians are a depressed bunch. While the research is actually mixed, I do see it in popular culture and on the couch. Famous comedians who have tragically died due to the toxic mix of depression and alcoholism include: John Belushi, Chris Farley, and Greg Giraldo, Richard Jeni and most recently, Robin Williams.
Luckily, most do not reach that level of despair and there are many comedians who do not experience clinical depression.
I believe part of what happens is that most comedians see things in the world that the average person does not see (or at least they don’t dwell on it). Obsessing about reality is bound to make anyone depressed so we need to change the pattern.
Comedy is the great reliever, the comical commode that flushes out the crap of life.
One of the finest examples of a “comedy coper” was President Abraham Lincoln. The Civil War raged on with death and destruction. The Union was in tatters and yet Lincoln was in stitches (well not all the time).
In Comedy Psychotherapy, I create a unique plan tailored to the individual (or couple) that heals emotional pain through comedic exercises and interventions. Many people leave treatment with a comedy act ready to perform. For those who are non-performers, they bring a renewed sense of comic energy to their relationships and their work.
