Creating a caption is a great way to practice your comedy and to train your brain to think like a comedian. You can take any picture (or drawing) and generate captions about what’s going on. It’s natural to want to come up with something interesting and unique but for now, I want you to practice “not trying too hard.” In fact, trying too hard makes you bomb in comedy and in dating. I talk from experience, so relax and let it flow.
Captions are very popular in political cartoons. These have existed since the founding of our country. And the trend has not slowed down. In fact today, there are many websites that give you cartoons or pictures and ask you to come up with a caption. Here are 3 websites that give you the opportunity to flex your mental funny bone:
Now that you’ve done that, let me give you your assignment…
Take a look at this picture below and write down the first 5 captions that come to mind.
I will also complete the exercise but I ask you not to look at mine until you have completed yours. And then, if you show me yours, I’ll show you mine.
You might find that we have similar ideas. This sometimes happens in comedy where two comedians come up with a very similar joke. On the other hand, you might come up with something completely different. That’s okay too! There are no wrong answers, just great fun. Good luck and may the captions be with you.
Here are my 5 captions (remember don’t look until you complete yours)!
- Can I borrow your lipstick?
- Carpal Butterfly Syndrome
- Early bird gets the former worm
- 14 carat butterfly
- Butterfly kisses
Feel free to share your 5 captions in the comments below.
